Cleaning happens on your machine — which means whole folders at once, files far too large or too confidential to send through a browser, and a program that keeps working when the network does not.
Files you would never upload
Client documents, medical scans, journalistic sources, legal exhibits. Sending them to a website to strip a GPS tag defeats the point.
One network switch, off by default
Cleaning blocks every outbound request at the process level — a rule the program enforces on itself, not a promise in a policy. AI rewriting is the single exception: it reaches a model provider, only once you switch it on.

What the desktop version does, and what it does not. It removes
metadata, and it proves what it removed by reading the exported file back. It does
not touch a watermark hidden inside pixels — nothing we could honestly sell you
does. A statistical watermark in text is a different animal: it lives in
which words a model chose, so there is no character to delete and no cleaner can
reach it. The only operation that acts on it is choosing the words again, which is
what the Rewrite screen does — over the internet.
What any detector will conclude from the result is not something we measure, and we
will not pretend otherwise.

Downloading is free; using it is not. The application opens on its
activation screen and does nothing else until a licence key is entered. We would
rather you knew that before the download than after it. There is no trial: the free
web version on this site is the trial, and it does the same inspection and the same
cleaning, one file at a time.
Windows will warn you the first time. Here is why, and what to do
When you run the installer, Windows may show a blue screen saying "Windows protected your PC". Nothing is wrong with the file. That screen appears because Windows does not yet recognise us as a publisher — and it will keep appearing until enough people have downloaded QuietMeta without incident.
We would rather explain it than let you find it alone:
- On the blue screen, click More info. The link is small and easy to miss — it sits just under the message.
- A line appears naming the file. Click Run anyway.
- That is all. The screen does not come back for this version.
How to check the file is the one we published. You do not have to
take our word for it. Open PowerShell in the folder where the file landed and run:

A code-signing certificate is what makes that screen go away for good, and we will get one once this application has found its first buyers. The reputation it carries builds with downloads either way. Until then, this page is the honest version of the story.
What you get, and what you do not
You get the application, every update to major version 1, and the right to use it on one computer for as long as you like. You do not get a subscription, a cloud account, or a tool that checks in with us: when you inspect or clean a file, QuietMeta blocks its own network access at the process level, and nothing is ever sent to GHIC. The one exception is rewriting, described just below, which you switch on yourself.
Rewriting is the one thing that rule lets through, and only while you are asking for it: AI rewriting sends the text you typed into the Rewrite screen to a model provider, so that the words can be chosen again. It is off until you switch it on, and it needs an internet connection.
50,000 words of rewriting come with the licence, paid for by us. In that mode the text travels through our server, which passes it to the provider on our account — so it does pass through us, and we say so plainly here and in the privacy policy. We keep no copy of it and write none of it to any log; what we keep is a count of words against your licence identifier, and nothing else.
After those 50,000 words, the application asks for your own API key and then talks to the provider directly, with nothing passing through us at all — roughly one cent per thousand words, billed to your own account there. Reading files, removing metadata and cleaning invisible characters never leave your machine, with or without a connection.
